What is Saftyswitch?
SAFTYSWITCH RCBOS (Residual Current Circuit Breakers with Overcurrent Protection & Over voltage protection) are a type of electrical protection device used in electrical circuits to protect against electric shock and fire hazards caused by ground faults, overcurrent, overvoltage and short circuits. SAFTYSWITCH RCBOS combine the functions of a residual current device (RCD), Over voltage protection and a miniature circuit breaker (MCB) into a single unit.
Here’s a breakdown of the functions they serve:
- Residual Current Device (RCD): This component of the RCBO detects imbalances in the electrical current flowing through the circuit. If it detects a leakage of current to ground, which could indicate an electrical fault such as a person accidentally touching a live wire, it quickly cuts off the power to prevent electric shock.
- Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB): This part of the RCBO is responsible for protecting the circuit from overcurrents and short circuits. If the current exceeds the rated capacity of the circuit or if there’s a short circuit, the MCB trips to interrupt the flow of electricity, preventing damage to the wiring and appliances and reducing the risk of fire.
- Over Voltage Protection: SAFTYSWITCH divert excess voltage away from sensitive equipment by shunting it to ground. They are commonly used at the point of entry for electrical services into a building or at the outlets to protect individual devices. Surge protectors are particularly effective at mitigating transient voltage spikes, such as those caused by lightning strikes or power grid switching.
Combining these functions into a single device provides comprehensive protection against a wide range of electrical faults, making SAFTYSWITCH RCBOS an essential component of electrical safety in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. They are commonly used in distribution boards, consumer units, and electrical panels to protect individual circuits or specific appliances.
